Welcome to Christmas Island

Christmas Island is a world renowned fly fishing destination certain to be on most angler's bucket list. Christmas Island, or Kiritimati, is the largest coral atoll in the world and provides the saltwater angler unmatched opportunities to target a variety of species. While bonefish will always be the main attraction, be prepared to take shots at giant trevally, bluefin trevally, golden trevally, triggerfish, queenfish and several other species willing to eat a fly.

Fishing Description

Christmas Island is unique in that all fishing with the exception of the offshore option is done on foot. Whether wading a small pancake flat or exploring the ocean side flats of Paris or Korean Wreck, the intimate experience of stalking fish on foot is to be celebrated. The Villages is perfectly located, just steps from the flats, on beautiful Discovery Beach. Given its location near the equator there really isn't a seasonal aspect to the fishery; the atoll generally sees fairly benign conditions 365 days a year. The fishing is all done on foot and The Villages provides a 1:1 guide-to-client ratio, almost unheard of in the saltwater fly fishing game. Just steps from your lodge you will board a South Pacific style outrigger boat, captained by a knowledgeable boatman, with a few of your co-anglers and the guides and head out to the flats. The boatman will drop groups off, at the guide's direction, on anything from a 1,000 sq ft pancake flat to a miles long pristine beach flat.

The inner lagoon plays host to an astounding variety of species, from main target species like bonefish and GTs to colorful parrotfish, triggerfish, algae eating milkfish and countless other exotic targets. Given favorable tides and conditions, the opportunity exists to explore the oceanside flats like Korean Wreck and Paris, targeting many species in a dynamic reef environment.

Accommodations

The Villages is a small, intimate enclave located on Discovery Beach, just minutes from the town of London. There are ten comfortable air conditioned cabins just steps from the beach. Anglers gather at a central hub, or "maneaba", for cocktails and sashimi after a great day of fishing. Breakfast and coffee are served every morning and a sandwich bar is laid out before departing each day, allowing each angler to prepare lunch to their liking. A variety of local fare including fresh fish, chicken and meat dishes will be served nightly, along with a well appointed bar. If participants have a liquor, mixer or wine they particularly enjoy, they should plan on bringing it from Honolulu or the duty free airport shop.
